- Joker leads Bafta Awards with 11 nominations
- But awards have been criticised for lack of diversity
- Baftas 2020 sees no non-white nominations in acting categories
The Baftas have come under fire for failing to nominate a single non-white star for acting awards in the 2020 nominations, which were released today, with Joker leading the nominations.
Some of cinemas biggest names were nominated for an EE Bafta Award, but not one person of colour was recognised across any of the male or female acting categories, which spans 18 nominations.
In fact, both Scarlett Johansson and Margot Robbie picked up two nominations each, with the former up for Leading Actress for Marriage Story and Supporting Actress for Jojo Rabbit, and the latter picked twice for Supporting Actress for Bombshell and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Film fans have noted that Awkwafina – who became the first Asian person to win Best Actress at the Golden Globes for her role in The Farewell – was snubbed, although she has been nominated for the EE Rising Star Award. Awards season favourites such Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers) and Cynthia Erivo (Harriet) and critically acclaimed Lupita Nyong’o for Us.
The controversy follows similar criticisms of other major awards, such as the Oscars, which was criticised for a lack of diversity in 2016. Amanda Sonia Berry, who is chief executive at Bafta, has previously acknowledged a lack of diversity in the industry, telling the Telegraph that “the pool of people to draw award winners from isn’t diverse enough”.
Joker leads this year’s nominations with 11, while The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood both picked up 10 nominations, and 1917, which comes to British screens this week, picked up nine.
