Tokina Cinema has added four new lenses to its Vista-P series. The 40mm T1.5, 65mm T1.5, 105mm T1.5 and 135mm T1.5 Vista-P lenses join the existing five lenses to form a comprehensive set with their own look.
Each lens covers Vista Vision-sized sensors, with an area of definition that can be used on even larger formats.
The lenses have a vintage character, combined with high resolution and modern lens handling, that are claimed to offer a “unique blend of buttery, swirly bokeh towards the edge of the frame, yet incredibly high resolution in the middle”. They are also said to have “virtually no breathing and a super-fast T1.5 T-stop that guarantees excellent separation between subject and background when required”.
At the edge of frame, the look is akin to famous vintage lenses like the Helios-44 or Petzval, with a swirl-type distortion especially favoured for portraits. Stopping the lens down reduces this effect for a more conventional rendering. Overall, the look is said to be cleaner and more modern (but with lower contrast), with resolution that exceeds traditional vintage lenses.
