As part of IBC SHOWCASE, IBC is creating a unique International Honour for Excellence award. The top honour will be not be presented to one person. Instead, it will honour every single news broadcaster in the world, to recognise the efforts they have made in the very difficult times which the world has faced in 2020.

In response to the award, NBC’s Deborah Turness explains how the broadcaster has adapted to working amid the restrictions imposed due to Covid-19.

“I’m a great believer in the saying, ‘necessity is the mother of invention’, and that has never been more true than over the past few months,” said Turness.

“As lockdown hit we experimented, we failed and we tried again until we found new ways of using new technologies to produce our content.

“Like many across our industry, we swapped our newsrooms for kitchens, attics and, for those lucky enough to have them, garden offices. But we went much further and reworked our entire production model and showed how technology can be harnessed to make us more agile, nimble and flexible and at ultra-low coast.

“We swapped control rooms for laptops and have been able to replace studios with Zoom and in many cases used iPhones where we might traditionally have used conventional tv cameras.”
