- Premier League available on Optus Sport with 5G mobile network
- 380 games available on-demand this season including mini matches
- Available via Fetch, Apple TV, Apple Airplay, Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV or Xbox
In what it claims is a global first, Australian pay-TV operator Optus Sport will exclusively live stream English Premier League matches over a 5G mobile network.
The Premier League on Optus Sport will be the first global coverage over a 5G mobile network, the company announced to the press.
Optus is starting to roll out its 5G mobile network in Australia and 5G is currently only available in limited areas. It represents a step change in streaming technology as Optus accelerates its 5G rollout, although the company didn’t reveal which matches would be available over the service.
Optus vice president, TV, content and product development Clive Dickens said: “Making the Premier League available on Optus Sport through 5G is a world first. This will be the first of many 5G initiatives we will take at Optus.”
All the on-field action will be complemented with a revamp of programming for matchday and beyond, which will include new content such as Scores on Sunday, Matchday Live Extra, The Weekend Review, The Headline Makers, The Watching World, The Big Interview, The Analysis Show and Inside the Premier League.
Premier League director of broadcasting Paul Molnar said: “It is great to see innovation like this by our global broadcasters and we look forward to seeing Optus Sport continue to innovate with its distribution and coverage going forward.”
For the first time, every live match will be shown exclusively on Optus Sport.
In another first, Optus Sport is also making all 380 games available on-demand this season so fans never miss a moment of the action.
Optus Sport is in its fourth year of broadcasting the Premier League and is Australia’s exclusive home of every live match of the world’s most watched football league.
Optus head of TV and content Corin Dimopoulos said: “Having the Australian rights to show every single match of the Premier League exclusively live is an enormous opportunity for Optus Sport.
“Our suite of exclusively live premium sport content, which also includes the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, notably increases with the renewal of the Premier League this season.
“We are extending our production of mini-matches and highlights, giving our customers the ability to watch Premier League action when they want and how they want so they don’t miss a minute of their team’s action.”
Watch Optus Sport on the big-screen via Fetch, Apple TV, Apple Airplay, Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV or Xbox, or via tablet, mobile, desktop or laptop.
Optus Sport is available as an optional extra on eligible Optus plans for no extra cost, or for Optus prepaid customers, a $10 Optus Sport Add On is now available. Non-Optus customers and Optus customers ineligible for a monthly subscription may subscribe to Optus Sport for $14.99 per month.
