US films and TV shows account for almost half of content available on video on demand platforms in Europe according to a new study by European Audiovisual Observatory (EAO).
The report, titled “Film and TV content in TVOD, SVOD, and FOD catalogues – 2025 edition”, found that US works represent 48% of all content in VOD catalogues.
By contrast, works produced in the European Union represent 35% of individual titles. The majority (69%) of European works found in catalogues are "non-national," meaning they were produced in another European country.
Films are the primary type of works available in VOD catalogues, accounting for 85% of all content, compared to 15% for TV seasons shows.
Global SVOD services have the highest diversity, with 29% of their content originating from outside of Europe and the US.
Transactional services (TVOD) catalogues have the highest share of US works, representing 55% of all content, and the lowest share of European works with 21%.
When measuring the geographic concentration of EU works in national catalogues, the report found that France (36%) has the highest share, followed by Germany (30%), Italy (28%), and Spain (26%). These major production hubs were characterised by a high share of national content, whereas smaller production countries reportedly rely mostly on non-national European works.
