Warner Brothers’ Barbie and Universal’s Oppenheimer lead the film nominations for the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards while HBO’s Succession, FX’s The Bear and Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building have scored multiple nominations in the TV categories.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie scored nine nods, while Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has eight.
The TV pack was led by Succession with nine citations, while The Bear and Only Murders in the Building have five nods each.
Other movies earning multiple nominations included Apple’s Killers of the Flower Moon and Searchlight’s Poor Things, with seven apiece, and A24’s Past Lives with five.
Two women are among the contenders for best director: Greta Gerwig for Barbie and Celine Song for Past Lives.
Barbie’s nine nominations include Margot Robbie as best actress in a musical or comedy, Ryan Gosling for best supporting actor.
Oppenheimer is nominated for cinematic and box office achievement - a new category which aims to give more recognition to films popular with the public. Christopher Nolan is nominated for best director, while Emily Blunt has also been nominated for her supporting role in the film.
South Korean feature Past Lives is the most nominated non-English language film with a total of five nominations.
For film distributors, there was a tight race at the top: Netflix had 13 nominations; Warner Bros., 12; and A24 and Universal, 11 each.
In TV, HBO/Max earned 17 nominations, closely followed by Netflix, with 15.
The 81st Golden Globe Awards will take place on January 7, 2024.
