“For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities,” the 60-year-old Malaysian actress said on stage. “And ladies, don’t let anybody ever tell you [that] you are ever past your prime.”

The multiverse comedy became the first film to win seven Oscars since Gravity in 2013. Its other prizes were for best directing and original screenplay for creators Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, and best editing.

The Whale star Brendan Fraser, known for 1990s roles such as The Mummy, won best actor for playing a severely obese man trying to reconnect with his daughter.

Netflix’s German adaptation World War One novel All Quiet on the Western Front won four Oscars, including best international feature, cinematography, production design and original score.

Navalny, about the poisoning that nearly killed Alexei Navalny, Russia’s most prominent opposition leader, won the Oscar for best feature documentary. In the animated feature category, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio won a widely predicted Oscar.

Naatu Naatu, a song from the Indian movie RRR that created a viral dance sensation, was honoured as best original song.

Among other films with multiple nominations, Top Gun: Maverick, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Avatar: The Way Of Water and Women Talking all had to make do with a single Oscar each.

Avatar: The Way Of Water won the best vfx prize, while Top Gun: Maverick took home the best sound award.

The Banshees Of Inisherin was unsuccessful in all nine of its nominations. Other front runners including TAR, The Fabelmans and Elvis also came away empty handed.

Independent studio A24, which released Everything Everywhere and The Whale, claimed nine awards, more than any other studio.
