Disney+ has signed a one-year agreement to broadcast The Overlap network's Stick to Football podcast and a new show, named Stick to United with Wayne Rooney.
It is the latest example of streaming services branching out into football podcasts and video-led sports podcasts after Netflix backed World Cup editions of Gary Lineker’s show, The Rest is Football, over the summer.
Stick to Football is hosted by Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Jill Scott, Ian Wright, and Roy Keane. Meanwhile, Stick to United with Wayne Rooney will be hosted by Wayne Rooney and Mark Goldbridge.
Overall, 40 new episodes of Stick to Football will be available to stream on Disney+, alongside existing streaming platforms and The Overlap’s YouTube channel, with 20 episodes exclusive to Disney+ for a limited time. Disney+ has also commissioned an additional six episodes out of the UK exclusively for the streaming service, featuring a range of special guests.
Stick to United with Wayne Rooney is set to debut with 50 episodes on Disney+, alongside existing streaming platforms and The Overlap’s The United Stand YouTube channel, with extended episode content exclusive to the streaming service.
The six exclusive episodes of Stick to Football and extended episodes of Stick to United with Wayne Rooney were commissioned by Sean Doyle, Vice President (VP) of Unscripted at Disney+ EMEA, and Angela Jain, Head of Content at Disney+ EMEA.
Media and entertainment group Global, which owns the radio station London's Biggest Conversation (LBC) and podcasts including The News Agents, bought a majority stake in The Overlap last January. This was followed by the acquisition of Goldbridge’s YouTube channels, The United Stand, and That’s Football in April.
Gary Neville, Co-Host and Co-Chair of The Overlap, said: “We’re immensely proud to be partnering with Disney+. It’s one of the world’s most iconic entertainment brands, and for us this is a unique partnership that feels right for everyone involved. What’s exciting is that we’re not changing who we are. Our community will continue to enjoy our content exactly the way they always have through YouTube, while at the same time, Disney+’s incredible global streaming audience will now be able to discover and enjoy it too. It’s a partnership that expands our reach without compromising our identity.”
