Formula E Technology and Domo Broadcast Systems have worked together to meet a new FIA safety requirement to have all Formula E cars’ on-board cameras simultaneously visible during a race.
Since 2022, all 22 Formula E cars have had ten on-board cameras, but not all could be viewed simultaneously in real-time. They were constrained by available RF spectrum, although cars also recorded content for later remote playback.
To make all 220 cameras live without compromising broadcast coverage or using significantly more RF spectrum, Domo developed automated dynamic bandwidth management, controlled centrally. From 2026, all cars will transmit live cameras at reduced bandwidth (2.5MHz instead of 7MHz) for race safety.
For broadcast use, a remote touchscreen switches it from 2.5 to 7MHz, re-configuring to encode four cameras while the output of the main forward-facing camera is automatically routed to the race officials for safety camera viewing. The system is programmed with available spectrum for each race and automatically ensures frequencies and bandwidths do not interfere with other cars. In future, using Domo’s IP mesh technology, the safety camera could be combined with two-way safety data, and also provide talkback to each driver.
