It is becoming increasingly difficult and challenging for linear broadcasters to create exciting new content due to budget inflation driven in part by the growth of OTT.
This has led traditional broadcasters to look towards innovative new funding models, according to a panel of experts interviewed by IBCTV at the IBC2019 show.
All3Media CEO Jane Turton, Red Arrow Studios president and co-CEO James Baker and Sky Studios CCO Jane Millichip took part in the video panel, which was recorded and broadcast live at IBC2019.
”SVoDs such as Netflix and Amazon have disrupted the market place - in many good ways,” said Millichip. “The quality has never been higher, but there has been an inflation of budgets which we are all challenged by.”
Baker discussed innovative funding models, saying that there is “a model that sits in the middle” where studios and distribution groups put in a significant amount of the budget in order to hold on to content rights. “So you want to find a couple of anchor broadcasters who will ensure your investment,” he added. “Those funding models are certainly more complex now if you want to hold on to those rights.”
For Turton, the market is providing more opportunity than ever before but “funding is a challenge.”
“What you’re doing is trying to run a portfolio so you have shows that are more afforable right through to the more stunty sci-fi shows.”
