Netflix release The Power of the Dog and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune are the top contenders in this year’s Oscar nominations. 

The Power of the Dog has been nominated for 11 awards including Best Picture and Best Film Editing, whilst blockbuster sci-fi Dune is in close second with 10 nominations, including in the Visual Effects, Cinematography and Best Picture categories. Kenneth Branagh’s personal childhood story, Belfast, joins them in the Best Picture category, collecting a total of 7 nominations.

Other productions in the Visual Effects category include No Time to Die and Spider-Man: No Way Home, whilst Dune, Nightmare Alley, The Power of the Dog and The Tragedy of Macbeth are all up against Spielberg’s West Side Story for Best Cinematography.

Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley is in the running for Best Production Design, alongside Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth and Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story.

Dune

Dune is up for 10 awards

Three Netflix films are up for awards in the Best Film Editing category- Tick, Tick BOOM!, Don’t Look Up and The Power of the Dog, along with Warner Bros. Pictures King Richard.

Other trending titles include the Netflix release The Lost Daughter, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza and Amazon Prime’s Being the Ricardos.

This years Best Picture features 10 guaranteed nominees for the first time since 2011.

The 94th Oscars awards ceremony will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles’  on 27 March.
