Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) has published phase one of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) new video and audio coding specification enhancing future interoperability for UHD TV broadcasters with HDR.
The approval by the DVB Steering Board for TS 101 154 V2.3.1 is the ’Specification for the use of Video and Audio Coding in Broadcasting Applications based on the MPEG-2 Transport Stream’.
The standard incorporates the improvement of video and audio quality for TV broadcast services including High Dynamic Range (HDR), which enhances the ‘sparkle’ increasing the contrast ratio and results in pictures.
Broadcasters and consumer electronics manufacturers will be able to provide UHD-1 Phase 2 products and services in accordance with the ETSI standard, a timely move for the advances in interoperability.
The DVB specification includes Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) and Perceptual Quantiser (PQ) transfer functions complimentary to HDR.
As well as HDR, Higher Frame Rates (HFR) are defined as offering sharper images of moving objects by going beyond the current 50/60 frames per second.
Next Generation Audio (NGA) has been added by DVB, the latest audio scheme to provide immersive and personalised audio content using object or scene based audio coding.
The DVB’s approval of ETSI’s specification emphasises the importance of new standards and the vital role these changes play in an evolving industry.
The DVB said the specification was agreed after 50 online meetings, 10 days of physical meetings and contribution from over 30 companies and other interested parties in the Technical Module group on Audio-Visual Coding (TM-AVC).
