IBC2017: The ongoing industry collaboration to bring the benefits of IP real time signal flows is demonstrated in the IP Showcase.

Based on the SMPTE ST-2110 final draft standard, over 50 vendors will demonstrate the flexibility and efficiency in using a single set of common IP interop standards aiming to educate, encourage and implement interoperability for a more creative and dynamic broadcasting industry. 

Industry bodies have collaborated with vendors equipment designed to demonstrate and implement practical, flexible and efficient real-time IP signal flows and production.

In the lead up to IBC, Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA) and Video Services Forum (VSF) successfully hosted two interoperability workshops between SMPTE ST 2110 devices to prove the vibrancy of IP as a mainstream operation.

The strength across the SMPTE ST 2110 standard, AMWA’s IS-04 specification and the preliminary IS-05 specification saw the highest number of companies participating in the two workshops that took place in the United Kingdom and the United States in August. 

The majority of participants in the UK demonstrated the sustainability of the interoperable Network Media Open Specifications (NMOS) draft specification IS-05. While all 49 participants in the US demonstrated interoperability between SMPTE ST 2210 and AMWA IS-04 and will be showcasing their work at the IBC IP Showcase. 

IS-05 Connection Management specification builds on AMWA’s IS-04 Discovery and Registration by providing a common and open API for vendors to establish a connection between SMPTE ST 2110 devices across the professional media and entrainment spectrum. 

VSF announced the US workshops not only successfully demonstrated interoperability but broke new ground in proving the ability to support SMPTE ST 2110 but organisers compiled efficient workflows for live production, play out and contribution. 

Broadcasters and media owners now have proof the array of industry recognised products are interoperable enabling plug-and-play systems using IP technology.

  • The practical steps to take to unlock the benefits of using IP networks for real-time media
  • The knowledge, skills, and resources required
  • How others are already leveraging IP in real-world broadcaster applications
  • An understanding of the SMPTE ST 2110 suite of professional media over IP networks standards
  • What the future holds – including NMOS IS-05 Connection Management for IP-based media systems 

The IP Showcase theatre, curated by IABM, will be running a series of presentations covering the full gamut of knowledge for real-time IP production and intra-facility distribution. Delegates will hear about the increasing number of real-world IP deployments from broadcasters who have already embraced IP signal flows. They will also learn about the business and creative benefits of IP, and how these benefits can be applied to their own operations.
