SMPTE: Shaping the next generation of standards

Working in co-operation with the Hollywood Professional Association (HPA), it will present various Big Screen sessions in the RAI Auditorium on Monday 17 September that will take visitors behind the camera to hear first-hand from the talent creating film and TV.

The IP Showcase also returns this year, dedicated to educating visitors on the business and creative benefits of IP.

SMPTE Executive Director Barbara Lange said: “We’re excited about the ongoing maturation of the IP Showcase, which we’re proud to be supporting at the IBC Show again this year, and we also look forward to showcasing new SMPTE collaborations with standards, professional and technical partners to help increase interoperability and drive the continued advancement of entertainment technology.”

In the first of two sessions in the Big Screen on high dynamic range (HDR), HDR Focus: Blue Planet 2 and The Grand Tour (17 September 10:30) will see Andrew Dunne, Post Production Technology Manager, BBC Worldwide, and Chloe Blackwell, Post Production Supervisor, Chump Productions, dissect the two factual productions and explain how they used HDR technology to build scale and bring the screen to life.

HDR: From post to screen (17 September 11:10) will feature speakers from De Lane Lea, The Farm Group and Jellyfish exploring HDR postproduction, VFX, grading and delivery. The panel will discuss kit and how to exploit the potential of HDR and create lifelike images.

New and emerging technologies that bring people to the cinema will be addressed in Keeping it real: Technologies behind immersive entertainment (17 September 12:20). Topics to be covered include holographic images, immersive sound and location-based experiences that immerse audiences into the story.

Also on Sunday, two leading cinematographers, Geoff Boyle, NSC FBKS and Bill Bennett, ASC, will discuss their latest 4K, HDR and high frame rate projects in The latest formats: The best cinematography (17 September 14:45).

For the IP Showcase, SMPTE has partnered with the Audio Engineering Society (AES), Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS), Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA), the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the Video Services Forum (VSF) to highlight the latest advances in IP technology and how it can add maximum value to the broadcast industry.

Presentations and panel discussions will feature broadcasters and technologists from across the industry, while over 50 vendors will collaborate to demonstrate real-world IP interoperability and how using SMPTE ST 2110 and SMPTE ST 2022-7 can provide for greater flexibility and efficiency.
